Match report by Mark Mauger:
The Second team squad is starting to come together. Today's game was against Tottonians 3s, who earlier in the season came to us and ran out comfortable winners, 58-10. Today it was a different story.
When we arrived, we found that one of their coaches had to ref as the nominated one hadn't shown. Once again we welcomed some new players, Dale Griffiths at hooker, Ian Paul and Joe Collins at second row and Tom Morts at fly half.
The game got off to a good start with Doddsy scoring inside ten minutes followed by another a short while later. The forwards were having a hard time with Totts dominating the scrummage and rolling mauls although credit to the lads who stuck at it.
A lot of pressure from Totts on our line resulted in them finally scoring only for Doddsy to run another one in.
In the second half the forwards started to run some phases, setting up good platforms for Morts to do his bit, which he did with style when he split their backs wide open and ran in for his first try for the club.
Still Totts came back into it, only for Doddsy to get his fourth with some good moves from the backs. Then in the dying minutes Dave Griffiths scored under the posts when one of their players popped it to him after being tackled by Ian Mauger, leaving the final score Southampton 40 - 22 Tottonians. A very good result and hopefully we can do the same when we meet them in the league.
From the touchline we got a very positive response, with the Totton coaches and supporters saying that we could give their Seconds a good game- praise indeed lads, and certainly something to think about. Training together is the key to success for us, so lets keep this winning streak going.
League game next week against Winchester 3s. Come on you Saints!
