The day started well everyone turned up raring to go. However a minor setback happened pre match, someone (Amy King) forgot our linchpin number 9 (Andrea García Ávalos). Then broke down on the way back to get her but thankfully managed to get back for the majority of the game thanks to Mark Mauger.
The game started with Southampton getting in Havant’s face and controlling their forwards the first trys went against us when it went wide and the players Southampton had off Havant, went soft (unintentionally) and let their own players through.
Then the Amy, Andy, Ellie road show turned up players were put in their preferred positions and the game went up a notch. The work rate of the forwards kept the ball safe and the backs were allowed to play their game.
Southampton’s try came when the forwards counter rucked and won the ball then proceeded to play some phases sucking in the Havant defense. Good hands of the backs, with very few dropped, thrown away or careless balls throughout the game, carried the ball to the wing where Claire (Totts) put the ball down for a well worked team try.
The second half was a test for Southampton ladies as Havant pretty much brought on a whole new team. Our girls fought hard but the fresh legs were too much as Havant played wide or kicked over the top and our girls who had played a full game just couldn’t match that of players that had only played 10 or 20 minutes
All in all the Southampton played well but were undone by numbers and the pre match situation. They looked good going forward and had many try scoring opportunities. The team is starting to look exciting on the pitch and the next game should be one to watch.
