Late flurry of tries earns Southampton the bonus point

Southampton had to come from behind after Fawley scored a hotly disputed try. Keary watched the ball bobbling into touch in goal after a chip over the top, but the Fawley winger dived on top and was awarded the try with Keary protesting he had already grounded it.

Southampton hit back with a try from Kevin Simmons after some powerful work from the forwards on the Fawley 5 yard line. He could have scored earlier, but fell over. But when he stayed on his feet he rolled through the tackles and touched down.

The only other points of the first half came from Keary's boot, as he put Saints ahead 8-13 at half time with a penalty, conversion and drop goal.

The second half stayed tight until the 65th minute, when the Fawley second row was sinbinned for playing the ball on the floor. The forced reorganisation obviously caused Fawley some confusion and Southampton capitalised almost immediately.

An attack got the ball wide on the right, where Keary took the ball and showed great strength to force his way over. He added the conversion from a wide angle.

Second half substitute Mark Price grabbed Southampton's third try with Will Ewart wrapping up the bonus point win as he made the extra man on the left wing.

Fawley did respond with a try themselves, although even their scorer admitted it was a second movement. Unsurprisingly, Fawley's touchline full of amateur refs didn't have much to say about that one...!

Chris Alston finished things off with an excellent finish from the right wing, stepping his man and running it under the posts. Keary put the conversion giving him a personal haul of 19 points and Southampton a 13-39 win.

James Mankievicz and Chris Milne had a "biggest hit of the day" competition, with both men putting in a number of massive tackles. Hector Bevit-Smith will be decorating the man of the match jacket this week as he kept the forwards going forward and found quick ball against a committed Fawley defence.

Overton failed to earn a bonus point in their 13-20 win over Alresford, meaning Southampton are now a point clear of them at the top and playing the game-in-hand next week against second-bottom placed Chineham.
