Southampton score eight as Chineham crumble

Southampton scored eight and claimed a bonus point against Chineham to move up to second place in the league.

Ryan Keary got the home side off the mark after only four minutes as the ball was passed through the backs. Mark Waterer went wide drawing the defence out of position for Keary to dart through the gap and score in the corner.

The score was then doubled straight after when the Southampton pack drove a line out for Pete Fox to touch down.

Keary was involved again when he provided the pass that put Mark Waterer in on the overlap, with Rob Gould adding the conversion for a 17-0 lead.

Southampton had a strong wind behind them in the first half and used it well to pin Chineham in their own half. They piled further pressure on the visitors by stealing a number of line outs making it difficult for Chineham to clear their lines.

Southampton secured the bonus point after only twenty minutes after some good work from the forwards took them to the Chineham line. With the defence in disarray Harry King drove over from close range leaving Gould an easy conversion.

Chineham then got back into the match as Southampton conceded a number of penalties, but some good defence kept Chineham scoreless.

Julian Robins continued his scoring run on the half hour mark after an excellent kick from Rob Gould gave Chineham a line out 5 yards from their line. Southampton then stole the ball, setting up a fantastic attacking opportunity. They attacked first through the forwards, drawing in the defence before the ball went out through the hands to Julian Robins, who cut into the line on a great angle to go through untouched. Gould's conversion made it 31-0.

Jules doubled his tally almost immediately when a chip over the defence came down between two bemused Chineham players who both left it to the other. Robins came through the middle of the pair, collecting the ball and beating the chasing defenders to the line.

Chineham then got on the scoreboard after a free kick and penalty took them towards the Saints line, before a drive from a forward found a gap in the defence taking the score to 38-7.

Southampton nearly rounded the half off with another as Mark Waterer chased down a chip to the corner, but as he dived and touched down the ball crossed the touchline. A video ref might have awarded the try, but without the aid of a replay the ref called an end to an excellent half for Southampton.

Things started much better for Chineham in the second half as the number 8 picked up from a scrum and offloaded for the left winger to score.

They then grabbed a third when some missed tackles allowed an attack in. The ball was moved through good hands and back inside for a centre to score under the posts.

But Southampton were by no means finished and Ryan Keary combined again with Mark Waterer with the winger finding another overlap before returning the ball to Keary to score.

Pete Fox grabbed his second try from another catch and drive, before Chineham earned themselves a consolation bonus point as their centre took a quick tap penalty and found a gap in the defence. The final score was 52-26 taking Southampton up to second place in the table.

They have a chance to go top next Saturday as they travel to league leaders Fareham Heathens.
