Bonus point win for Southampton

Southampton earned a bonus point win against Overton with a 30-14 victory, despite conceding an early try inside the first ten minutes.

After an Overton forward had forced his way over from close range, Southampton got the ball out through their backs where Ryan Keary handed off a number of defenders to score in the corner. The conversion was missed from a wide angle.

Ian Mauger then put Southampton ahead after some good work from the forwards, with Rob Gould adding the conversion.

Southampton dominated much of the first half without having much to show for it, but added three points with a penalty from Gould. The score was 15-7 at half time.

Southampton started the second half looking to play in a more controlled manner, but some missed tackles took Overton to within five metres of Southampton's line almost immediately.

Some great defence saw Southampton turn the ball over at the ruck and some quick hands very nearly put in Chris Alston for a short 95 metre run-in. But the pass was intercepted and Overton recycled the ball quickly for their number eight to power over under the posts, making the score 15-14.

But Southampton managed to find the control they were looking for, with the forwards taking responsibility and making excellent ground. But it was the backs who scored next, with Mark Waterer breaking through the defence and using his pace to dive over in the corner.

The forwards continued to dominate and a surging maul drove Overton's defence back and over the try line, with Rob Greenaway appearing from the pile with the ball in his hands. The score was now 25-14, guaranteeing Southampton a four-try bonus point.

But that wasn't the end of the scoring, as Ryan Keary ran in an almost identical copy of his first try down the left to cap an excellent performance.

Steve Dewey earned himself the man of the match award for some excellent forward play, while Bean also had an excellent game.

Southampton now have two wins from two and gained a bonus point in the process. It's a trip in the funbus to Aldershot & Fleet next week, where we will be saying goodbye to Fraser.
