Southampton dominate but Romsey take the points

Southampton started the game strongly and soon found themselves within range of the Romsey line. The ball was recycled for Jamie Hoque to run on to, but he was held up short of the line and Romsey were able to clear.

With the Romsey pitch severely waterlogged and intermittent rain showers, it was never going to be an easy day for the backs. But Keary's boot helped Southampton make good distance as they attempted to play the game in Romsey's territory.

But Romsey have had some good results recently and their forwards contain a number of big runners. The first try came from the number eight, who picked up and drove through the defence from close range to put five points on the board. A penalty then took the score to 8-0, which is how it stood at half time.

A the start of the second half, Romsey had a chance to extend their lead when they got the ball out wide where they found an overlap on the left wing. The final ball put the winger across the line, but the ref pulled play back for a forward pass.

Shortly after Romsey found themselves in a similar position, with numbers wide on the left. But despite a sloppy pass which landed at the feet of the winger, he managed to scoop up the ball and find a gap in the defence for the second try.

Southampton's pack have been dominating many sides this season and did so again when they finally started to click. The rolling maul made good ground on a number of occasions, but Southampton were unable to break the defence.

Another penalty took Romsey to 16-0, before a number of penalties gave Southampton a chance inside the Romsey twenty two. The forwards stepped up with a training ground move, but Romsey's defence held firm and the ref blew for full time.

A disappointing result for Southampton, who have been improving considerably in recent weeks but are still finding it hard to turn their dominance into victories.

Southampton travel to Farnborough next week and will be desperate to repeat the victory they achieved when the sides met earlier in the season.
