Southampton hit Andover for six

The last time these sides played each other, Andover inflicted a heavy defeat on Southampton. Despite missing a number of regular players, Southampton produced a dominant performance to score six tries in a 36-24 win at a very windy Test Park.

Andover opened the scoring with a try from the forwards before Fin Hammett hit back for Southampton. He picked up the ball at the base of the scrum and attacked down the blind side, stepping inside the winger before holding off the tackle from the Andover full back to score in the corner. An excellent kick from Joe Timmins added the extras to level the scores at 7-7.

Andover came close to scoring again, but excellent defence from Jordan Dashwood saw them held up over the line. Instead it was Southampton who took the lead with the final play of the first half. Dave Ward went close after crashing through the centre, he offloaded to Joe Timmins who dived over for the try. Timmins then converted giving Saints a 14-7 lead at half time.

Andover opened the scoring in the second half with a crash from the number eight from close range, but Southampton struck back minutes later. A neat line out move between Ryan Dashwood and Kev Simmons put Dashwood in for a try in the corner, stretching the lead to 19-12.

Southampton's next try came following a break from Josh Fearon, who offloaded to Jordan Dashwood. He popped to Cam Coffin, who touched down to guarantee Southampton at least a bonus point. Shortly after, a superb kick from Coffin - a prop - earned Southampton a 50-22 line out and a chance to attack deep in Andover territory.

Some quick hands from the backs put the ball in the hands of winger Carl Shodeke. He beat his opposite man on the outside but was tackled just short of the line. Joe Timmins was in support and he picked up and dived over for his second try of the game, making the score 29-12.

Andover then threatened a comeback with two tries, making the score 29-24, but Southampton sealed the win with another try right at the end. Good handling from the backs put Joe Timmins through down the wing, he had Steve Judd in support and he held off the tackler to score wide on the right. The final whistle came soon after, giving Southampton a 36-24 win.

This was an excellent game from Saints, with stand-out performances from Carl Shodeke, Joe Timmins and Man of the Match Ryan Dashwood, who got to enjoy a pint on a chair for the first time since his brother took on the captaincy. Dick of the Day went to Josh Fearon, who turned up late. Possibly a bit harsh, given that he had only just got back from holiday and wasn't even due to be playing until late on Saturday morning.
