After last week's win against Petersfield, Southampton were keen to record back to back wins as they headed into the forest to face Fordingbridge. Adam Harrington and Ollie Sutton earned call ups from the Seconds, with Cam Coffin and Steve Judd resuming their impact roles off the bench. The game also saw the welcome return to Southampton ranks for Aidan Sharp, albeit in the role of first aider as he continues his recovery from a broken collarbone.
Fordingbridge started strongly, with an early try by the left winger inside the first two minutes. They kept the pressure on, running in three more quick tries inside the first fifteen minutes, earning themselves the bonus point and leaving Southampton facing an uphill struggle.
Southampton tightened things up and spent a period camped in the Fordingbridge half, but their only chance for points came from an unsuccessful penalty attempt from Joe Timmins. Instead, Fordingbridge extended their lead with a chip over the defence which bounced fortuitously for the chasing fly half. He juggled it, but held on and touched down under the sticks, before converting his own try.
Southampton pressed on, but lacked the accuracy to put anyone away cleanly. A crossfield kick aimed at Tommy Ashby bounced unhelpfully, which forced him to halt his run and gave the chance for the defence to bundle him into touch. The ref was playing a penalty advantage and brought play back for Tom Howells to kick to the corner. Southampton secured the ball from the line out, with Kev Simmons barreling into the Bridge defence. The ball the came out to the backs and a big miss pass would have found Ashby unmarked on the wing, but the pass went forwards and Fordingbridge could clear their lines.
Fordingbridge added another try with a chip over the defence, before Southampton finally got off the mark themselves. A great chase from the kick off put Fordingbridge under pressure, with Jordan Dashwood stealing the ball and breaking through the defence. He offloaded in the tackle to Cam Coffin, who dived over for the try. An excellent kick from Joe Timmins added the extras for the last points of the half.
Fordingbridge started the second half as they had started the first, with an early try from the forwards. They then spent much of the early part of the half camped in the Saints twenty two, but the defence stood firm until the hour mark. As the ball was moved wide, a handling error had Southampton convinced a knock on was coming their way. But no whistle came and Bridge hacked the ball through to score under the posts.
A quick tap penalty then put Southampton on the back foot, before a rolling maul took Fordingbridge over the line for the final try of the game.
A disappointing afternoon for Southampton, who struggled to put together many serious try scoring opportunities. Further concern came from knocks to Tom Howells and Tom Laycock, who both now face a period of recovery. Tommy Ashby was the stand-out performer with a number of excellent tackles earning him the Man of the Match award. Alec Gray - rather harshly - got Dick of the Day for being late... after changing his shift to be enable him to play at all and warning skipper Dashwood he would be late!
