Southampton travelled to Fareham Heathens looking to get their league campaign back on track after a run of disappointing defeats. The home side went into the game bottom of the league and were equally keen to kick start their season.
It was Heathens who started brightest, with Southampton under the cosh for much of the opening twenty minutes. Pressure on the Southampton scrum saw Ian Budd briefly going airborne before some technical changes from the visitors tightened things up, much to Buddy's relief. The introduction of Alex Hill, returning to the side after an injury, also helped shore up the Southampton set-piece. Fareham made the most of their early dominance and ran in two first half tries. Joe Timmins bagged a penalty and Tom Laycock crossed for a try for Southampton, meaning Heathens went into half time leading 14-8.
Saints came out fighting in the second half and narrowed the deficit with a penalty from Joe Timmins before a try from Jack Leadbitter saw them take the lead for the first time at 14-16.
A cross-field kick from Alec Gray found Ryan Morell who then joined up with Joe Timmins to put the centre in for Southampton's third try. Timmins converted his own try for a 14-23 lead.
Southampton's fourth try bagged the bonus point when Tom Howells picked up from the base of the scrum and raced clear from around halfway, jinking through the defence to score under the posts. Joe Timmins converted to cap off an excellent 14-30 win for Southampton, moving them clear of Chichester and Romsey and up to 8th. Fareham Heathens remain rooted to the bottom of the table on zero points.
Tom Laycock took the Man of the Match award, while Kev Simmons got Dick of the Day after he was yellow carded for going off his feet at the ruck and scooping up the ball whilst on the deck.
