Southampton called up new recruits Tadeg Kerdoncuff, George Cambridge and Dylan Emerson with Steve Judd returning to side as they travelled to face an Andover side looking to record their first win of the season.
Southampton claimed the first points of the game, with skipper Jordan Dashwood - filling in at inside centre - making a good break down the left. He was stopped short of the line and Josh Fearon took the ball even closer before Alec Gray put a perfectly weighted cross field kick right into the arms of winger Robbie Ashby. He popped it back inside to Marcus Coffin who touched down for the try.
But from a good start, things then started to go downhill for Southampton. Marcus Coffin left the field with a torn bicep and Steve Judd followed him off shortly after with an injury to his knee. Andover meanwhile had cancelled out the early Southampton advantage and then pushed into the lead with tries of their own, with their kicker adding the extras each time to inflict maximum damage on the visitors.
The second half saw Southampton grab another try with a pick and go from Gus Nye, but Andover replied with more of their own, including a pair from their muscular number 9 who barrelled his way through a helpless Dave Ward on his way to the line. Jordan Dashwood took a bang to his hand but with no replacements left was forced to play on one handed, albeit "out of the way" on the wing. Cue a look of utter confusion on his face when he found himself running with the ball and unable to rely on his trademark hand off...
A knock to Gus Nye saw Southampton play out the last part of the game with fourteen men. The ref did give Southampton the opportunity to call the game early, but credit to the lads who all insisted on playing out to the end. Andover came away with a 49-10 win to record their first win in the league this season.
Not a great result for Southampton and the injuries will add an extra headache when it comes to selection next weekend, but there were still positives to take from the game. The new lads slotted in well, with all of them making some excellent tackles and showing an eagerness to run with ball in hand. The attitude from all at the end shows the fighting spirit Southampton will need to rely on as they compete in a higher division.
Tom Laycock was awarded Man of the Match whilst Dick of the Day went to Dave Ward, who managed to hurt both shins before the game walking into a table in the dark.
