With 11 players unavailable, Southampton had an unfamiliar look about them as they faced up to New Milton.
But they started brightly and immediately had New Milton on the back foot, forcing the visitors to give away a penalty in front of the posts which Ryan Keary slotted over.
Despite the early promise, Southampton were unable to keep up the pressure and instead allowed New Milton's dangerous full back to run at them too easily. Doug Barrow put in a tackling masterclass on the New Milton 13 all afternoon, but his man-of-the-match performance stood out on a day when too many tackles were missed by Southampton as a whole.
New Milton dominated the first half and racked up 27 points before the break, before Southampton finally found some form in the second half. But as in previous weeks, the late rally was not enough and they could only manage one try through number eight, Chris Milne.
New Milton hit back with a second half try of their own, consigning Southampton to their fourth defeat on the bounce, 10-34.
