Southampton progress in the Hampshire Cup after convincing win over Mariners

Southampton travelled to Lymington to play a Hampshire Cup match against the team currently two points behind them at the top of the table.

On a pitch that sloped steeply from end to end and with a strong wind blowing downhill, Southampton started with the conditions in their favour. Stand-in stand-off Ryan Keary used them well, putting the ball behind the defence, with Tom Baldwin chasing well.

With Southampton pressing the opponents' twenty-two, a spear tackle saw Mariners' outside centre sent to the sin-bin while Ryan Keary took the three points.

A perfect kick from Keary then bounced into touch forcing Mariners to defend their own line five yards from their line. But Harry King stole the ball at the line and Russ Clark got the ball away quickly to the backs. Doug Barrow and Jules Robins combined well in the midfield and they put Ray Davies in round the outside. Keary put the conversion over for a 0-10 lead.

The third try came after some good running lines from the backs resulted in Harry King taking a short pop and forcing his way over. He couldn't get to the floor, but offloaded to Doug Barrow who scored in the corner. Keary put over the conversion from a difficult angle for 0-17.

Lymington did have a few chances, but some good defence and some handling errors kept them out. A missed penalty also ensure ensured the score stayed at 0.

Instead it was Southampton who commanded the game, with a turnover giving the backs another chance to make space for Davies on the right wing, and it took an excellent tackle to stop him doubling his try count.

Just before the break, the Southampton forwards got in on the act as a catch and drive took them over the Lymington line, with Pete Fox coming up with the ball. Keary added the extras, making it 0-22 at half time.

The second half saw Southampton attacking up the hill, but that didn't stop them making chances. Another turnover and quick hands put Harry King through with Ray Davies free in support. Unexepectedly, the number eight grubbered the ball through for him. Davies was a fingertip away from making it a brilliant decision, but instead the ball was knocked on.

A Keary drop goal drifted just wide and Doug Barrow had a few chances but was unable to find the support outside him.

Ryan Keary then ruined a possible man of the match performance by talking his way into a yellow card, earning him ten minutes on the naughty step. But Mariners couldn't take advantage of the extra man and the score remained the same until Keary returned.

Lymington grabbed a consolation try with minutes remaining, as the number eight picked up from a scrum and forced his way over. The conversion made the final score 7-22.

With a number of first teamers unavailable, it was an excellent result against Southampton's closest league challengers. James Mankievicz had a great game at hooker, both at the line out and in the loose. Harry King stole a number of throws and was involved in a couple of tries.

Ryan Keary had a superb 70 minutes.
