Southampton close out league season in style

Southampton headed into the final league game of the season knowing the title was already in the bag, but they were keen to put on a good show with numerous Old Boys and spectators watching from the sidelines.

Saints kicked off into a strong wind which caused a few problems for both sides throughout the game. But despite the conditions Saints were soon into their stride using their offloading game to break the defence. The first try came after excellent hands from Alex Hill put Kev Simmons through, with the big prop proving impossible to stop from close range.

Jordan Dashwood then extended the lead as he broke through a number of tackles to score under the posts. Tom Howells converted for a 12-0 lead. Dashwood will feel aggrieved after another effort was disallowed with the ref deciding he had knocked on when grounding the ball, although even the Chineham players agreed it had been ripped free after it had been grounded.

With such a strong wind against them, Saints were happy to go in at half time 12-0 with Chineham having failed to use the conditions to their advantage. Half time changes brought Josh Fearon and Tommy Ashby on as centres with Dave Ward moving to full back to complete his collection of backs positions this season.

Josh Fearon was soon involved in the action, making a break down the left. As he crossed the line to score, the Chineham defender hit him with a high tackle, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty try.

Shortly after, a massive kick from Fearon bounced perfectly into touch to earn Saints a 50-22 line out on the Chineham five metre line. A catch and drive from the line out took Saints close, before Jordan Dashwood peeled off the maul to score his second try and earn Saints the bonus point.

Jack Leadbitter then got in on the action, breaking through the defence and finishing off with a ridiculous swan dive that earned him the Dick of the Day pint. Tom Howells converted to make it 31-0.

With the win seemingly now a formality, Southampton set their sights on keeping the clean sheet. Whenever Chineham had the ball they found themselves up against fierce defence from Southampton, who were competitive at the breakdown and stole the ball a number of times. After one such turnover a chip over the top was gathered by winger Ryan Morrell who crossed for Saints' sixth try, with Howells again converting making the score 38-0.

Chineham continued to press for a consolation try and some quick hand from their backs put the full back into space on the outside, but he was brought down by a tackle from full back Dave Ward and Saints defence held firm. Jack Leadbitter's game came to an early finish as he took a nasty bang to the head, but luckily there was a vet on hand to glue his ear back on.

It was a great performance from Saints to finish off the league season in style. They will now set their sights on the Cup and face Hook and Odiham in the first round at Test Park next Saturday.
