Ruthless Southampton blow away Trojans to stay top of the table

Trojans were on a high after defeating Nomads last week, but the party never got started for the home side as Southampton dominated throughout to run in ten tries to one.

Trojans began the game with an early kick deep into the Saints 22, but the resulting maul was overturned by Saints who then worked the ball out to Ryan Morrell who ran almost the full length of the pitch for the first try. Jordan Dashwood converted for an early seven point lead.

Saints struck again immediately with Josh Fearon finishing off a move straight from the restart. Again Dashwood converted and Saints were 14-0 up after only seven minutes.

There was a deal of interest in the scrums, with Saints' Alex Hill facing off against Saints' coach Marcus Coffin, representing Trojans. The scrums were initially fairly balanced, but the wily ex-Saint Coffin dug into his reserve of front-row darks arts to unsettle the Saints scrum.

Saints' third try, and Morrell's second, came shortly after and the bonus point was secured on the half hour mark. Tom Howells finished off a brilliant passage of play that saw Saints move the ball from inside their own 22 through some excellent link up play from the backs. Aaron Owen crossed for Saints' fifth try, before Gus Nye added another before half time. With Dashwood's conversions, Saints led 40 - 0 at half time.

Having brought a massive bench, Saints made a number of changes at half time. It was replacement Jamie Hume who grabbed the next score, finishing off a move down the right wing. A line out then gave Saints the opportunity to catch and drive, the rolling maul found a hole in the Trojans' defence before Jordan Dashwood peeled off to run in under the posts.

Trojans then grabbed a consolation try after a penalty on the Saints 5 metre line with their mulletted number 8 forcing his way over from close range. The conversion took the score to 7-52.

After a number of high tackles earned Saints a warning from the ref, it was Jamie Hume who bore the brunt as a borderline high tackle earned him a yellow card. But despite being a man down Saints couldn't stop scoring as Steve Hodds successfully chased a kick in behind the Trojans defence, before Tom Howells ran in from halfway for his second. The game finished 7 - 64, with Jordan Dashwood bagging an impressive seven conversions (missed the one in front of the posts though...)

The game also saw Aaron Nelson don his (brand new) boots after years of threatening to come out of retirement. He will be hoping to actually touch the ball if he plays again.

Ryan Morrell earned the Man of the Match award and Jamie Hume was Dick of the Day for his yellow card - possibly a bit harsh as most of the work to earn it was done by Tiko Sigani and Jordan Dashwood.

Saints stay top of the league after this impressive victory.
